Photo Essay: Japan’s Future Once Again Hangs in the Balance

 

Japan has seen more than its fair share of catastrophic disasters, from the 1888 eruption of Mount Bandai, shown above, which killed almost 500 people and laid waste to entire villages, to last week’s horrific earthquake and tsunami, the devastation from which is still uncounted. One week on from the earthquake, the world anxiously holds its breath to see if nuclear disaster can be avoided at the Fukushima Daichi Plant. Against such a precarious background, the Archbishop of the Nippon Sei Ko Kai called this week for people to stand in prayer and solidarity with the people of Japan.
